It is a fishing reel place on State Rd 13 in Orange Dale. Submitted by jjones474 on Sun, 06/22/2008 - 9:51am.
He's a very nice guy, has great fishing tips. However, 99% of what he sells is junk. Most of the reels are used, the boats are barely waterworthy, inside is a hodgepodge of old junk; electronics, pipes, plumbing stuff, fishing stuff, etc. I went in one day on a pleasant drive down rt13 (when gas was below $3) to see if I could get a cheap, junker rod and reel. Well, I could get a junker reel, but cheap? Hah! He wants premium prices. Maybe it was just because I didn't look like a local fisherman, but there was no way in hell I was paying $20 for something that was probably pulled out of the trash. Ask about his boats. You could put a down payment on a house for what he wants for one of them. Once again, it may have been just me. He is a throwback from before there were all the ubiquitous cheapie-marts and dollar stores. When people paid a little more for convienence, rather than having to drive "into town" to get a spare part. The fact that he's still around speaks volumns for the resilience of the last generation. I've known the Reel Man for about 6+ years. His name is Wayne Slaughter. Wayne can be very friendly and knowledgable, but he can also be cratchity at times. I consider him a friend. Wayne runs that business to have something to do and he does it quite well. Yeah, he has A LOT of "junk" in that store so when you go there, if you do, just think of it as a flea market booth that is REALLY, REALLY FULL! LOL He gets the boats from people that need the cash. He sells them for whatever they will sell for if he can't get his asking price. And some of those "old reels" he has in his display case? A few of those are antique collectibles, and YES, they are worth a chunk of change to a collector. I looked up a few of them for him because he was thinking of having me post them on EBay for him. Turns out the ones I looked up weren't worth what he wanted to get out of them so he never listed them. Say what you will about Wayne, if you treat him with respect he'll treat you the same way. If you go into his place with an "attitude" or if you act like a fool, that's how you'll be treated. However, if you like to stand around and shoot the breeze, tell fishing lies and have a good afternoon learning stuff, (and lies), (LOL), The Reel Man is the place to go in St Johns County!!! (I live less than a mile from him so I stop by all the time.) :-) Submitted by jjones474 on Mon, 06/23/2008 - 12:18am.
I guess you look like a local, then, eh? Just kidding. Like I said, he's got character. |

The over-laid pop-up ads are a PITA! Even when I avoid clicking on them and click "login", they come up REGARDLESS! Just now it took THREE different times to get to the login screen.
If I want to see Morrison's Home site, I'll click it. But it coming up regardless is uncalled for. They get "hits" from folks that never wanted to go there in the first place.
What's up with that???
