From St. Johns County,

St. Augustine, FL – (May 19, 2008) – The St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners will hold a Special Meeting on Thursday, May 29, at 1:30 p.m. in the County Auditorium, located at 4020 Lewis Speedway in St. Augustine.

The purpose of the Special Meeting will be to consider and possibly take action on a proposed ordinance to place Charter Government as a referendum item on the August 2008 election ballot. The Board may also discuss and take action on any other matter that may legally come before it during the Special Meeting.

Q & A with School Board Chairman Beverly Slough and activist Kim Kendall

St. Johns County School Board Chairwoman Beverly Slough and community and school activist Kim Kendall submitted letters publicly this week about the issue of whether to elect School Board members by single member district, as is done now, or at-large, as was the case prior to 1986.

The County Commission has proposed shifting the county to a charter form of government. One of the changes being considered is to change how school board members are elected.

Another Charter meeting happens Thursday

For those of you monitoring the St. Johns County debate on instilling a charter government system, the next forum on that subject is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 9 at 6:30 p.m., according to a news release from the county Public Affairs Office.

This meeting will be at the Southeast Branch Library, 6670 U.S. 1 South, just north of County Road 206.

As with the other meetings, this one's open to the public. County commissioners will be there to listen to ideas and proposed changes to the draft. The draft is available now on the county Web site, www.co.st-johns.fl.us and at all branches of the county library system, the release says.
